Pledging to pay off debt, lose weight, give up on smoking once and for all? The holidays’ excesses always give way to New Year’s resolutions. While we usually set our sights on goals that make us better people, healthier or more financially secure, many people are promising to do things that make the world a better place. This year, according to a new survey conducted by New York-based Kelton Research, almost 60% of all Americans would rather pledge to give back by volunteering in 2010. Marquee team to train at famed Chelsea Football Academy in London and compete against top international soccer clubs

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Dec. 29, 2009) – Some of America’s most gifted high school soccer players were selected today to Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star Team, which will represent the United States against top international youth teams in Europe this summer.

The 18-member all-star team is comprised of the most elite 17-under boys who competed in Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club this week at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The Soccer Showcase, with more than 520 teams from around the country, annually attracts the most decorated high school soccer players in the nation and the all-star team was chosen based on the performances of the players throughout the tournament.

The select group of all-stars includes four players from Dallas– Chandler Crosswait, Murphy Short, James Hickey and Andre Reyes – who have previously competed against the United States 17-under National team. Also on the team are Malcolm Harris and Michael Gamble, who play for the nation’s top ranked team (Baltimore Bays) and who led their 15-under team to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship last year.

For the third straight year, the Disney all-star team will train at the Chelsea Football Academy near London in August and then compete against a variety of elite international youth soccer teams.

“Chelsea is committed to the ongoing development of soccer in the U.S., including fostering young talent,’’ said Chelsea Chief Executive Ron Gourlay. “ We look forward to hosting Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star team at our world-class training facility in Cobham this summer.’’

Last summer the Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star team worked out at Chelsea’s Academy training facility and experienced firsthand the day-to-day life of a top-flight English Premier League team, training with the academy coaches and competing against academy players. The Disney All-Stars finished with a 2-0-1 record.

“It was an unbelievable trip on all levels. From a soccer standpoint, it was an invaluable experience,” said Steve Nichols, 2009 Disney All-Star team head coach. “Having these kids see a Chelsea match in person and play the Chelsea Academy gave them exposure to the highest level of football. The coaches also benefitted as we got to witness how Chelsea coaches run their drills, practices and overall program.”

More information about Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star team will be available at www.chelseafc.com/america, Chelsea Football Club’s dedicated membership site for fans in America.

The Disney All-Star team is sponsored by adidas, which is dedicated to providing developmental and educational experiences for top level youth soccer players, college players and coaches, and operates Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star Team program.

Popular tournament draws top notch soccer clubs to Disney

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Dec. 22, 2009) – If you’re one of the best youth soccer clubs in the nation, where do you celebrate? Disney World, of course. In fact, the biggest names in youth club soccer are coming to compete in Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club Dec. 27, 2009-Jan. 3, 2010, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.

This year’s showcase features the top-ranked boys Baltimore Bays Chelsea and girls top-ranked Dallas Texans. In all, six of the top 10 boys teams in the nation and 13 of the top 20 girls teams as ranked by Soccer America magazine will compete among 520 teams and roughly 9,500 athletes over the eight-day event. The tournament annually attracts the best-of-the-best in youth club soccer.

An elite list of high school-aged soccer players such as Dallas Texans standout Conor Doyle and High School All-American Marquez Fernandez of the Baltimore Bays Chelsea will compete in Disney’s Soccer Showcase. These players are all trying to follow in the cleats of marquee professional soccer players such as Freddy Adu (Benefica), Eddie Johnson (Fulham) and DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), who all competed in Disney’s Soccer Showcase early in their careers.

The showcase attracts more than 800 NCAA college coaches and scouts, including prestigious programs such as North Carolina, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Harvard, Ohio State and Duke University.

“Disney’s Soccer Showcase has become the ultimate soccer experience for serious soccer players looking to get seen by college coaches,” said Patrick Dicks, Disney Sports area manager. “We have created the ideal experience that brings world-class facilities, tournament management, fantastic weather and high-quality competition together at the world’s No. 1 vacation and sports destination. Any soccer player in the United States who believes he or she can make it at the collegiate level knows that Disney’s Soccer Showcase is the tournament they have to attend.”

Not only can players get recruited by major colleges, but standout performers will be selected to Disney’s Soccer Showcase All Star Team and will have the opportunity to train at the famed Chelsea Football Club Academy, which is located near London, and compete against international teams such as Argentina, England and Germany in August.

Also, Disney’s Soccer Showcase is the first youth event in the country to use the official 2010 FIFA World Cup ball on the tournament’s final day.

The showcase is one of several soccer tournaments hosted at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The others are:

  • Disney’s Soccer Showcase Qualifier (Sept. 4-6)
